Features of Schooling in Canada
Canadian schooling is divided into three stages:
- Elementary (Grades 1-6): Basic knowledge of the world and society.
- Middle (Grades 7-8): Focus on specific learning directions.
- High School (Grades 9-12): Final grades leading to graduation.
When to Start Document Preparation for Canadian School Admission?
The academic year is divided into two semesters, lasting 10 months. You can start studying in Elementary or Middle School at any time of the year. However, for High School, you can start in September or February (beginning of the semester), so it’s best to plan ahead.
In Canada, the educational system is regulated at the provincial level, which means there is no federal curriculum. Each province sets its own requirements for compulsory and elective subjects, as well as the number of credits needed to graduate.
For example, in Ontario, students must earn 30 credits to receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). These include 18 mandatory credits (e.g., English, mathematics, natural sciences, history, physical education, and a second language) and 12 elective credits.
Benefits of Studying in Canada Before University
Studying in Canadian schools offers several advantages:
- Relevant knowledge applicable to various life fields.
- Participation in field trips, practical lessons, and projects that broaden horizons and help determine future career paths.
- Increased chances of entering Canadian universities, thanks to understanding the local education system.
- Development of academic skills that prepare students for the high academic workload required in university.
How to Apply to Schools in Canada
To apply to a school in Canada, you need to gather the required documents and submit your application. Upon paying for the first year of tuition, you will receive an admission letter, which can be used to apply for a Study Permit and visa.
Important Note: The student must have a guardian (legal guardian) in Canada to receive a visa.
Who Can Be a Guardian:
- An adult Canadian resident with PR or citizenship (no family relationship required).
- A parent (if the parent can travel to Canada with the child and act as a guardian, they must apply for a Temporary Visa for the entire study period).
For students under 14, it’s recommended that parents accompany the child. Many parents prefer to travel with their children, as it not only allows access to quality education but also provides a pathway to Permanent Residency (PR).
